The police were called to an apartment to investigate complaints of a suspicious sound of a gunshot. The door was locked, so the police entered the apartment with force. A woman was found dead in the apartment, from a fatal gunshot wound to the head. Since she had a gun in her hand, the Medical Examiner is questioning if this was a homicide or if she committed suicide. A neighbor was questioned and told police that she saw the woman’s ex-husband enter the apartment earlier that day. She heard arguing that escalated into screaming right before she heard a gunshot, which prompted her to call the police. The crime scene was processed by police to locate as much evidence as possible. A suicide note was found on the counter. A pen found next to the suicide note was also collected. Multiple cigarette butts were found in an ashtray near the suicide note. A cigarette was found in the woman’s left hand. A gun was found in her right hand. Both were collected as evidence. Blood was found on the floor pooling around the victim’s head. A bloodstain pattern was found on the wall, along with a bullet hole. The bullet was also recovered on the opposite side of the wall. Two different footwear imprints in dust were found on the floor near the body. The woman’s shoes (flip flops) were collected. A buccal swab was taken from the inside of the woman’s mouth to use as a DNA reference sample. Her fingerprints were also taken as a reference. The woman’s height was measured at 5’7″ tall. The woman’s ex-husband was located and questioned by police. He admitted being in the woman’s apartment to settle a dispute about money, but denied killing her. He also stated that he believed she was suicidal and he did not carry a gun to her apartment or see a gun in the apartment while he was there. He allowed the police to take his fingerprints, a DNA sample, and the shoes he said he wore when he visited his ex-wife. His height was measured at 6’6″ tall.1.
