Report of findings on Copyright Infringement and Policies
Copyright infringement, as simple as the term may seem, coststhe US entertainment industry millions of Dollars every year. When an artist records and releases their creative pieces of work especially music videos and MP3s, unscrupulous music pirates take advantage of the available technology to reproduce their music and at times benefit out of it. Music piracy, a common and notably notorious form of copyright infringement, comes in several forms. It may range from a person kindly sharing musical piece of work on an unauthorized platform to the deliberate and unauthorized reproduction of copyrighted music for financial gains (Recording Industry Association of America [RIAA]).
However, several copyright protection institutions have come strongly against the prevalence of copyright infringement acts by various internet and computer users. For instance, the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) has frequently formulated policies regarding the download of digital music in the recent past. This is because the trend in music piracy has shifted from hard copy music to illegal downloads of copyrighted digital music. More music download sites have adopted this new development where interested individuals have to pay some fee to access and download music from a music database. To some extent, one can allude that the RIAA initiative bore some fruits as far as reducing the number of illegal downloads is concerned. The much that RIAA has done has set the stage for the enhancement of copyright protection although much more still need addressing by all the stakeholders for recording artists to realize fully the fruits of their creativity (RIAA).
From RIAA’s point of view, the initial efforts to stop unwarranted music downloads is just but another major step towards protecting all the copyrighted digital music. As they say, the journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step, and RIAA is proud of the achievements so far, hoping to take the battle against piracy a notch higher with the aid of technological tools. So far, RIAA has put on notice most internet sites that tolerate illegal sharing and downloads of copyrighted music while sensitizing people on the dangers of burning copyrighted music to friends (RIAA).
