2607 Construction Management

IT MUST BE ABOUT THE TOWN (Cardwell, Queensland, Australia).

Construction Technology 5 (Building Envelope)

Climate Assignment: ecological and climate appropriate building design (how to design the building for the specific climate) 2607 Construction Management

Most traditional construction around the world is well-adapted to its environment and generally makes use of ecologically appropriate building materials and forms. Before mechanical space heating and cooling were available, traditional settlements developed a natural harmony with their climate and had, as a consequence, a minimal carbon footprint. With global warming, we are returning to ecologically sustainable and climatically appropriate building designs.

Task Details:

In this assignment, we will be looking at building designs in climatically diverse locations across Australia and our near neighbours, investigating appropriate solutions for that location from elsewhere in the world that will have a minimum carbon footprint. You will be focusing on traditional solutions (say prior to 1900’s) from around the world in areas of similar climatic locations, in order to derive possible solutions for the location you will be assigned (i.e. within Australia and New Zealand).

Note: It Must Be About The Town (Cardwell, Queensland, Australia).

You must research the following topics to determine their influence on building design for your location:

The characteristics the climate include:

  1. Average maximum summer and minimum winter temperatures.
  2. Diurnal temperature range both in summer and winter.
  3. Humidity levels in summer and winter.
  4. Solar characteristics (sun path and intensity of solar radiation).
  5. Atmospheric conditions (dust, cloudiness, precipitation e.g. mist & rain).
  6. Incidence and extent of snow, if applicable.
  7. Evaporation rates, rainfall intensities, flooding, fire and any other extremes of climatic conditions encountered at your location.
  8. Remember to consider the use of vegetation to control the extremes of the climatic conditions, if at all possible.

Lighting needs of the building

  1. Glare problems (i.e. does the location have snow or bare ground?).

  2. Natural and artificial methods of lighting (think about your occupants too).

  3. Lighting control throughout the day (control throughout the year…the extremes, energy efficient design).

Acoustic background of the building

  1. External noise levels.
  2. Internal noise levels.

Common problems

  1. You are to discover countries that have similar climatic zones, and determine from your research the type of traditional building, that might have appropriate lessons for your allocated area. You must NOT include a general discussion of the cultural, geographic or political background of the country, unless it relates to the design of buildings. Marks will be deducted for padding (information that is not necessary).
  2. Structural concerns, from snow, floods, earthquake & hurricanes should only be discussed if they affect the lighting, acoustic or thermal characteristics of the building.

Assessment Task:

Demonstrate how the environmental factors influence the design of traditional buildings in your similar region and how these principles can be applied and implemented to buildings at your location in Australia.

Your work must demonstrate the growing extent of your knowledge and understanding of concepts and underlying principles associated with the subject area.  Knowledge relates to the facts, information and skills you have acquired through your learning.  You demonstrate your understanding by interpreting the meaning of the facts and information (knowledge).

This means that you need to select and include in your work the concepts, techniques, models, theories, etc. appropriate to the task(s) set.  You should be able to explain the theories, concepts, etc. meaningfully to show your understanding.  Your mark/grade will also depend upon the extent to which you demonstrate your knowledge and understanding; ideally each should be complete and detailed, with comprehensive coverage.

Make reference to relevant cross-cultural communication theories/models.  You do not need to explain these in depth but introduce them briefly before analysing and applying them.

Your work must contain evidence of logical, analytical thinking, evaluation and synthesis. For example, to examine and break information down into parts, make inferences, compile, compare and contrast information.  This means not just describing What! But also justifying: Why? How? When? Who? Where? At all times, you must provide justification for your arguments and judgements.

Evidence that you have reflected upon the ideas of others within the subject area is crucial to you providing a reasoned and informed debate within your work.  Furthermore, you should provide evidence that you are able to make sound judgements and convincing arguments using data and concepts.  Sound, valid conclusions are necessary and must be derived from the content of your work.  There should be no new information presented within your conclusion.  Where relevant, alternative solutions and recommendations may be proposed.

The task specifies what is required of you.  Take care to answer only the question set fully. You may find it helpful to keep the task to hand when writing to remain focused on it.  Make sure you draw conclusions from the content of your work and provide a direct answer to the question in summary at the end of the task.

4.Practical application and deployment

You should be able to demonstrate how the subject-related concepts and ideas relate to real world situations or a particular context.  How do they work in practice?  You will deploy models, methods, techniques, and/or theories, in that context, to assess current situations, perhaps to formulate plans or solutions to solve problems, some of which may be innovative and creative.  This is likely to involve, for instance, the use of real world examples and cases, the application of a model within an organisation and/or benchmarking one organisation against others based on stated criteria.  You should show awareness of the limitations of concepts and theories when applied in particular contexts.

Specific To This Assignment:

You should deploy your chosen techniques, models and/or theories and wider reading to illustrate the points you make.  Where possible you should show awareness of the practical limitations of the models selected.

5. Skills for professional practice

Your work must provide evidence of the attributes expected in professional practice.  This includes demonstrating your individual initiative and/or collaborative working. You must communicate effectively in a suitable format, which may be written and/or oral, for example, essay, management report, presentation. Work should be coherent and well-structured in presentation and organisation.

You should write an essay in a recognised format.  All writing should be academic style, formal, focused, concise and subject specific.  It should use a font of Arial 11 point or Times New Roman 12 point and be 1.5 or double spaced.

RSM270 Operations Management

1. Productivity

(a) A company that makes shopping carts for supermarkets and other stores recently purchased some new equipment that reduces the labor content of the jobs needed to produce the shopping carts. RSM270 Operations Management

Prior to buying the new equipment, the company used four workers. Each worker produced an average of 80 carts per hour. Labor cost was $10 per worker per hour, and machine cost was $40 per hour. With the new equipment, it was possible to transfer one of the workers to another department.

Machine cost increased by $10 per hour while output increased by four carts per worker per hour, and the labor costs stayed the same.i. Calculate labor productivity before and after the new equipment.

Use carts per worker per hour as the measure of labor productivity.ii.Calculate the multi- factor productivity before and after the new equipment.

Use carts per dollar cost (labor plus machine) as the measure.iii. Calculate and comment on the changes in productivity according to the two measures. Which one do you believe is more appropriate for this situation?
