AFRICAN AMERICAN HISTORY
The topic can be about The Literature of the Reconstruction to the New Negro Renaissance 1865-1919
Use any one of this unit’s readings to discuss any of the techniques your text emphasizes that were used by African-American writers to express resistance to slavery and racism. Remember to quote and properly credit through MLA format specific phrases from the work that you select as illustrations of your claims and ideas. Don’t forget that in citing poetry, we cite line numbers, not page numbers. As always, consult the Purdue OWL or other online sources regarding proper citation format. In responding to this prompt, you may want to ask yourself the following questions:
Does each artist’s language and word choice seem deliberate? What sorts of narrative devices/techniques does your chosen author use to get the reader’s attention? For instance, how do Wheatley’s or Equiano’s writings address an audience that has its own specific expectations or ideas of blackness? Or with Dunbar’s poetry, how might the classical idea of the “ode” (you’ll need to look up this term) that his audience understood conflict with his subject matter in “Ode to Ethiopia”? Finally, to what mask does Dunbar refer in “We Wear the Mask,” and how does that metaphorical mask help him express resistance to slavery and racism? Remember – These are only examples of questions to which you might respond. Feel free to think of your own!
